Top Things You Didn’t Know About Mermaids

Have you always wanted to find out some cool facts about mermaids? Well look no further, because you can find out whatever you need to know, right here.

The Earliest Mermaid Legend Originates from Syria

In 1000 BC, there was a goddess who was known as Atargatis. She was the goddess of fertility and the idea soon spread to Rome and then Greeks. They were known for their lakes and fish, and that is one of the many reasons why the goddess Atargatis is often depicted as being in the form of a mermaid. Legend has it that Atargatis dived into a lake to transform herself, but only her bottom half transformed.

The Most Original Mermaid Wasn’t Even a mermaid

The merman was front and centre way before the concept of a mermaid ever came to light. Oannes predated the Syrian Atargatis by thousands of years, and he had the body of a fish and the body of a human. The idea is that his human form is beneath his fish form and this allowed him to both be among men as well as being able to live in the sea.

Mermaid Means Woman of the Sea

When you look at the Old English language, you’ll see that “mer” means “sea” and then the word “maid” means “woman”. Mermaids are basically women of the sea, and mermen are men of the sea.

Some Believe that Humans Come from Mermaids

The Pacific Islands are home to a lot of legends, and some of them state that human beings actually descend from mermen and mermaids. Somewhere in time, the tails dropped off and people soon learnt to walk on land. The rest is history, and those who are still mermaids or mermen are yet to make the transformation.
